Precise Search

Information characteristics or "properties" can distinguish items in a collection. Bibliographic cataloging recognizes many hundreds of such characteristics. GILS and related "metadata" approaches supplement these with criteria for precise searching of quite different information resources. In this way, the same techniques can be used to find technical publications, lists of experts, databases, software, Web pages, gene sequences, videos, and so on.

Chemical Abstract Service | - finds chemical substances by structure as well as bibliographic search of scientific information
U.S. Patent and Trademark Office - access to the patents is under program control, and so the records are not accessible to Web spiders
Texas Records and Information Locator Service | - searches state agency Web servers and locator records by words in text, subject, agency name, or publication title
